Homegrown

We were out there shooting elephants with mortars
And we didn’t know it was against the law
But the world is full of unforgiving mortals
Who gaze at us in amusement and in awe
So we went down to New Orleans to join the party
But when we walked in the piano player stopped
The bartender said, “You’re headed for the bottom”
That’s OK, though, we started at the top
Homegrown is fine; it’s fine with me
I like the happy buzz and feeling free
No one understands a guitar playin’ man
That says, “Homegrown is the best they’ll ever be”
Supplies ran out we went back to Kentucky
To make a tape and take a little rest
In the Bluegrass we consider ourselves lucky
‘Cause that’s the place where homegrown is the best
The record man came and handed us a contract
We looked and laughed and threw it on the floor
He said, “You’ll never make it without contacts”
But we didn’t know what we wanted to make it for
Homegrown is fine; it’s fine with me
I like the happy buzz and feeling free
No one understands a guitar playin’ man
That says, “Homegrown is the best they’ll ever be”
Homegrown is the best they’ll ever be
